Part of Samuel Hellier to Mrs Sarah Huntbach, 4th March 1754
Honour’d Madam.
I have now just time to Acknowledge
the receival of both your Letters & the Little Girdle came very
safe. I told you in my Last (which I hope you received) that
Mr. Blackfield was then here he mention’d Severall
things to me Amongst the rest Concerning the receiver
of the rents he seems Quite desireous to have ye
office & offers to Do it for a meer Trifle I told him
I did not know what to say to it because he was with
Mr Harris he told me that he had now intirely done
with him & that what he did now was for himself
& not for him & that he was in some hopes you
would recommend him for he said that you & him were
on very good Terms Certainly ‘twill be a [feather]
in his Cap & as he’s Little or no business {...}
I think it would be a Means of getting his {...}

as Some one must have ye office I think as well he
as any one he really has acted very much like
a Gentleman & I assure you if he had not stir’d
in ye appraizement things had not been so well
However let whoever have ye office ‘twill not be
so very agreable & they must be accountable
for Every farthing so that ‘twill on the whole be
money hardly evn’d if you would but recommend
him to ye Dean &c. I should be glad if ‘tis not
Disagreable to yourself as I hope ‘til not & I’m
sure he’ll act as he Ought to Do. —
The goods at London are now appraising &
Could wish that you was there for no Doubt their —
will be Strange work I wish I Could be in Town
with all my heart if I’d your Leave I Could but
{...} this Distance Cant judge of things so well.
[I am] glad to see you here & now Expecting
as ye Days are increas’d in {...} roads
good but I’d not advise you to bring Mrs.
Hannah if you do Come but a good Servant
in her Room. Am glad you Like ye Cheese
if you want anything thats to be had here beg
you’d Write. I’d a Letter from ye Dean
yesterday he goes to Exeter this Day. —
